This place is a great combination of some of my favorite things, sci-fi themed, vegan food and arcade games. Though it’s been at its location for about 6 years, I just heard about it within the last month.
I hadn’t seen my friend Laurie in a while so we decided to meet up here to give it a try. For starters, we ordered the Curry Fritters. I liked these, they were an odd mixture of a potato samosa filling and beer battered fried food with a really good cilantro-mint chutney. I would order these again. That chutney was very good, I’m not a huge cilantro fan so that’s saying a lot.
For the main entrees, I ordered the Southern Fried Tofu because I love tofu. Laurie ordered the Smothered Sweet Potato Tacos.
Of the two, the Sweet Potato Tacos was the most flavorful. We were both a little worried about the cheese, but it was really good. Not sure if it’s made there or from another source but it didn’t disappoint as a cheese substitute. I was really loving the tomato ancho sauce, it was very tasty and went amazingly well with the sweet potatoes. My only complaint here was that some of the sweet potatoes were undercooked.
My Southern Fried Tofu was good, not great, but good. I think part of my issue with it was that I was expecting the tofu to be thin slices, but instead, it was thicker little chunks, probably because it’s more likely to stay together than if it was thin slices. The mashed potatoes were really good, but I wasn’t crazy about the beer marinated kale or the corn salsa. I think Laurie liked the salsa more than me. I’ve come to the conclusion that I only like kale with apple cider vinegar.
We also had a couple of mixed drinks to go with our dinner. I chose the British Mule made with Pimm’s, vodka, ginger beer, and a splash of lime. I was a bit disappointed with my choice. I’m not that familiar with Pimm’s but thought I’d give it a try and I probably won’t do that again. Laurie ordered the Old Maiden which was Gin, St. Germain, cucumber pulp, fresh mint, and lime. It was delicious. I wish I had ordered it. Next time!
Overall I liked Ground Control. I’d give it a 7.5 out of 10 if I had that sort of rating system. I also have to say that I really liked our waiter, he was really nice and when we left he ran after me because I had forgotten my sweater in the booth.
