The List

An Ikea kitchen that I admired on a recent trip.

The other day a contractor friend of mine stopped by to help me think about how I should approach the overwhelming amount of things I’d like to see accomplished with this place. Some are small, some are big, some we didn’t even venture towards because after 2 hours of constant talking in this heat we had enough to contemplate.

So, let me document here the things I’m thinking of in no particular order

  1. Paint (or stain as he suggested) porch in front and fix the handrails that are too wide and most of all too splintery.

(We actually made this look worse with the power washer, thinking we were going to get right to painting it…oh how naive we were.)

  2. Paint the back porch and replace some rotting wood
  3. Enclose the back porch since we have a deck
  4. Well, the kitchen I’d like to redo it eventually…I’ll give you first my ideas and then his ideas. I’d like to:
    1. Replace some cabinets that are too big (they built the wall out (badly) to accomindate these). I’d loose counter space but i’m ok with that because…

    2. Add an island
    3. With smaller cabinets, I’d like to move the fridge over next to the oven, more or less like the layout in the above Ikea photo.
    4. redo the pantry

    His ideas

    1. Build the wall out better so it doesn’t look like such a hack job and fits in much better to not loose the counter space
    2. Move the fridge to the pantry and basically get rid of the pantry
    3. Make up for lack of pantry with a cabinet where the fridge is…this would work much better than just leaving the fridge where it is because the fridge is sooo deep.
    4. if doing the above we would also build out the closet that;s on the other side of the pantry wall.
  5. Since we’re talking about that closet I might as well add that I’d like to take down the paneling that’s in that room and drywall it.
  6. Regardless of what happens to that closet it needs to be painted.
  7. Upstairs:

  8. Stairs…Paint and carpet

(This is a shot from when we 1st pulled the carpet…it’s looks a little better now.)

  10. the floor needs to be painted until I can add a hardwood floor of some sort.
  11. Replace the drywall–I’m not sure it all needs to be replaced and baseboards
  12. Insulate
  13. Add roof vents….it gets HOT up there
  14. Paint
  15. Figure out an a/c option (window units, wall units, central)
  16. Did I mention: Paint everything!

What do you think? Looks simple enough, right? It’s so hot this list just totally overwhelmed me and I think I need to stop for now. I’m sure there’s stuff I left off. I think it’s for the best right now.

I did make some progress today…I bought 4 of the lights that we need to install in various areas around the house. 2 closet lights, 1 porch light and one ceiling fan/light which I finally decided would be a better idea than just a straight ceiling light. The air in this place needs all the help it can get to circulate, sadly. I’d much prefer a fancy ceiling light but in this case it just makes way more sense to have the fan.

What’s on your list of home repairs/upgrades?
